We have become dark skies as part of the North York Moors National Parks scheme, we provide facilities i.e. binoculars and information to enhance your stargazing experience while on holiday.
The North York Moors National Park is one of the best places in the country to see stars, because of the low light pollution levels and clear horizons. The further away you get from street lights, the better the view – and under a really dark sky, it’s possible to see up to ten times as many stars as in a city. North Yorkshire County Council have been altering street lights to help reduce light pollution and keep our skies dark to help enhance your view of the stars and planets.
In urban area’s you will be lucky to see 20 stars on a clear night, but in an area of low light pollution, such as our National Parks, you could see as many as 2,000. To celebrate we’re having a festival here, and in the Dales too!
During February the North York Moors National Park run a Dark Skies Festival with lots of events for you to join in, experience and enjoy our dark skies.
We hold events as part of this festival and we shall be adding next years events onto this page as soon as they have been announced, we shall also provide links to other events during the festival for you to take part in.
